FAQ: How does it work

What process is involved if I hire you as a trainer?
You can either contact me via email or telephone to discuss your requirements.

I do not charge for this consultation.

I will ask you some general information regarding your current exercise and eating habits, as well as medical history or potential barriers you may have.

With that information, if you decide you'd like to go ahead, we can arrange a day & time for your first training session.

I've never been to the gym before, do I need a certain level of fitness before hiring a trainer?

Absolutely not - each session is tailored to you as an individual regardless of your level of fitness.
The training will challenge you, but not beyond your capabilities.

I am not a "biggest loser" style boot camp type trainer, my job is not to torture you, but to build your confidence and performance progressively.

I understand that many people often feel intimidated about walking into a gym for the first time.

Your first training session with me will be very much about finding your base level which we can then build on over time.  You will not be thrown in the deep end, so there is no need to feel intimidated.

Do you offer discounts for booking several sessions?

Yes, I offer discounts for those who wish to book blocks of training sessions with me.  Please refer to the Prices page for more information.

How long are the training sessions?

Training sessions vary in length depending on your needs and your schedule, generally sessions last between 60 - 90 minutes.  However, if you can only spare 45 minutes, then we can work around this.

Once I start, am I obligated to continue?
You are never under any obligation to continue, however, block booking/bundles are non refundable.

What methods of payments do you take?

Payments can be made by personal cheque or cash.

Payments must be made on the day of your training session or in advance if you choose a bundle/block booking.

What should I wear?
Ideally you should wear clothing that you feel comfortable in and doesn't restrict movement.

I am a women, won't lifting heavy weights make me big and bulky?
Unless you are related to the incredible hulk, then absolutely not.

It's a common misconception that heavy weight training makes women big or bulky.  Women simply do not have the physical architecture (hormones) to build large amounts of muscle mass.

Lifting heavy weights (safely - within your limits of course) will actually help you achieve a more shapely figure/physique as well as a host of other physical benefits.

Please see the page Strength Training for Women for more information.

I already do lots of exercise, but am still overweight, can you help me?

If weight loss is your primary goal, nutrition plays a huge factor - I will discuss with you your current eating patterns and am able advise you on ways to help you achieve your goals and look at what type of exercise you are currently doing in order to maximize your progress.

I am not that confident and feel self conscious about exercise, can you still help me?

Absolutely, many people feel self conscious about joining a gym or hiring a trainer based on a false perception they may have.

Perhaps you've been in gyms before but have been put off by egocentric gym goers or felt like you didn't "belong" in that environment.

However my focus is on building your confidence and getting you to enjoy your workouts.

Training should not feel like a chore, nor do I want you to feel self conscious or intimidated about being in the gym environment.

I believe every person has a right to be in the gym regardless of their shape, size, gender, age or ability.
Just because someone is in good shape doesn't make them a better person - it just makes you a better you.  So there is no need to base your self worth on other people's perceptions or feel intimidated.

We can discuss your concerns about training in a gym prior to you undertaking a training session.
